License-plate combinations as generated serials, not car records

plates.autos maps each state’s sequential passenger format, then publishes a stable page for a combination such as SPR 9932: character positions, how many serials the map can hold, where that string sits in mixed-radix order, and neighbours. Refresh this home page and the cards below draw a new sample — each card is a crawlable URL. Nothing here is a DMV search.

SPR 9932 is a generated plate example that happens to fit several ABC-1234 states (Texas among them). The page does not claim a vehicle, an owner, or an issued stamp.

Hierarchy, not a million identical stubs

Thin doorway pages that only say “SPR 9932 is a license plate” are not this project. The atlas is nested:

/texas/ → /texas/license-plate-format/ → /texas/license-plate-combinations/ → /texas/license-plate-combinations/spr-9932/

The leaf page is format math plus tables. The combination in the URL never changes on refresh; the “similar combinations” module does, so internal links keep expanding while the document identity stays stable for search engines.

What a combination page contains

  • Plate text, state map, letter/digit positions
  • Spoken NATO reading
  • Total serials in the format and mixed-radix rank
  • Deterministic neighbours (SPR 9931, SPR 9933…)
  • Request-time random in-format links
  • Cross-state skeleton matches
  • Twenty long-tail FAQs that name the plate
  • A plain disclaimer: generated example, not a record
