How the numbers are made
Methodology
Every combination page is a small arithmetic document. The same engine that can draw SPR 9932 can draw any in-class string. This page is the specification so a reader can reproduce the counts without trusting a screenshot.
Pattern language
Each jurisdiction is stored as a passenger-serial map. A is a letter slot, 9 is a digit slot, and any other character is a separator (hyphen, space, or dot) that appears on the metal but does not enlarge the combination space. Texas is modelled as AAA-9999: three letters, a hyphen, four digits.
Letter slots draw from a 26-glyph English alphabet unless the state record lists skipped letters (for example California’s frequent avoidance of I, or Alaska’s I, O, Q in this atlas). Digit slots are 0–9.
Combination count
If a map has L letter slots and alphabet size a, plus D digit slots, the sequential space is aL × 10D. For Texas, a = 26, L = 3, D = 4, so 26³ × 10 000 = 175 760 000 serials. That figure is a teaching upper bound. Real series skip blocks, retire numbers, and reserve low digits; this atlas does not subtract those operational holes because it has no issuance feed.
Mixed-radix rank
An in-class string is converted to an integer by walking slots left to right, multiplying by the slot’s base, and adding the glyph index. Rank 0 is the first serial in that order; rank N−1 is the last. Neighbours are the same map at rank ±1, ±2, ±3, ±10, and a few larger deltas. SPR 9931 and SPR 9933 are therefore not guesses — they are adjacent ranks on the Texas (and any other AAA-9999) number line.
Stable URLs versus PHP random
Two generators run on the site:
- Deterministic catalogue. A CRC32 of
state|seed|indexpicks ranks so the hub samples and sitemap URLs do not thrash between crawls. SPR 9932 is pinned into every sitemap for maps that accept it. - Request-time random. PHP
mt_randfills the “fresh draws” and “similar combinations (this request)” modules. Reload the page and those links change. The canonical combination in the address bar does not.
That split is the difference between an educational atlas and a doorway mill. Search engines are asked to index the analysis of a specific string; they are also offered new internal links so the graph can expand without rewriting SPR 9932’s document.
What is out of scope
Specialty, university, military, government, trailer, motorcycle, and vanity plates often break the sequential passenger skeleton. They are mentioned only to explain why a string might exist in the world while missing the map. Display fonts, stacked graphics, and county stickers are not serial glyphs.
Formats are teaching models dated to a representative year. Legislatures and DMVs revise dies. If a live plate disagrees with this atlas, the live plate wins; file a correction against the methodology, not against a motorist.
