Two worlds, identical glyphs
Generated examples versus issued plates
A metal plate and a string in a URL can share every letter and digit. They are still different objects. plates.autos only claims the second: a generated example that fits — or fails — a published passenger serial map.
| Generated example (this site) | Issued plate (a DMV) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A glyph string plus combinatorics: rank, neighbours, FAQ copy that names the string. | A physical (or digital) credential tied to a vehicle record. |
| How it is made | PHP places letters and digits into A/9 slots, or a rank is decoded into glyphs. |
A series roll, a vanity application, or a specialty programme. |
| What refresh does | Keeps the URL’s combination; redraws similar in-class links with mt_rand. |
Nothing. The die does not reshuffle because a website reloaded. |
| Owner / vehicle | Never attached. SPR 9932 has no car on this page. | Bound to a registration. Not published here. |
| Proof of existence | Proof that the string is in-class (or why it is not). | Only the issuing agency can confirm stamping and current status. |
Why the distinction matters for search
If every URL only repeated “SPR 9932 is a license plate,” crawlers would correctly treat the set as thin programmatic pages. Unique math — character positions, permutation count, percentile of rank, deterministic neighbours, cross-state skeleton hits — is the document. The disclaimer is not decoration; it is the claim the page is allowed to make.
Coincidence is allowed
Somewhere, a sequential series may already have passed SPR 9932. That coincidence does not convert this URL into a public record. Conversely, a series may have skipped the block. This atlas cannot see either event. Photographers who blur plates are practising privacy, not confirming that a combination is sensitive.
How to use a page honestly
- Cite it as a format worked example, test fixture, or fiction aid.
- Do not cite it as proof of a vehicle, a crime, or a celebrity car.
- If you need issuance, ask the state; if you need a new in-class sample, reload the similar-combinations strip.
