California · sequential passenger map

California license-plate format

California’s long-running passenger serial is one digit, three letters, three digits (1ABC123). In this atlas the pattern string uses A for a letter slot and 9 for a digit slot. Other characters are separators that appear on the metal but do not enlarge the combination space.

How the map works

Each A slot independently takes one glyph from ABCDEFGHJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ. Each 9 slot takes 0–9. The product of those bases is 156,250,000 — the size of the sequential space taught here. Hyphens, spaces and dots in 9AAA999 are display only.

California exhausted AAA 999 in the 1970s and introduced the seven-character 1ABC123 format in 1980. The leading digit increments as letter blocks roll. Sequential passenger plates are not vanity phrases.

Before this map, California used AAA 999 and AAA 999 numbered resets. Optional graphics (universities, military, environmental) can look nothing like the sequential passenger die and are not counted in the 156,250,000 figure.

Letter I is often avoided. A string like SPR9932 (letters first) is not a California passenger serial.

Generated versus issued

A string that fits 9AAA999 is in-class. It is not automatically an issued plate. Series can skip blocks, retire numbers, or reserve low digits. This essay never queries a motor-vehicle file. See also generated vs issued.
